Team Reports
Enterprise field-service platform connecting multi-team job dispatch with automated compliance reports, mobile offline sync, and edge API microservices.
Explanatory Architecture
Simplified explanatory reference architecture; deployment-specific details, proprietary site topologies, and credentials omitted for security.
Architecture Flow:
- Field App: Offline-capable local data collection.
- Sync Queue: Queued updates with idempotency keys.
- Edge Gateway: Distributed serverless edge functions with JWT and RBAC authentication.
- Database & Reports: Multi-tenant relational database with RLS, and edge PDF report rendering.
Project Overview
Team Reports is a commercial B2B field-service and operations management platform engineered for engineering contractors, facility managers, and technical maintenance teams. The platform bridges dispatch scheduling with automated on-site compliance reporting, structured asset tracking, and client sign-offs.
As Lead Architect, I established the system architecture across web management consoles, cross-platform mobile applications, edge compute microservices, and multi-tenant relational databases.
Operational Context & Field Constraints
Field service engineering operations face practical logistical constraints:
- Intermittent Connectivity: Facility maintenance frequently occurs in shielded switchgear rooms, subterranean basements, and industrial plants where cellular reception is inconsistent.
- Administrative Overhead: Field technicians historically recorded notes on paper or unstructured messaging threads, requiring post-shift manual transcription to compile standard client reports.
- Multi-Tenant Organizations: Service contractors manage concurrent contracts across different commercial properties, requiring isolated organization workspaces and audit logs.
Core Architecture Decisions
1. Offline-Capable Field Sync Queue
- Approach: Designed an offline-capable client queue with local caching and idempotent mutation tracking.
- Rationale: Technicians can complete inspection checklists, attach equipment condition photos, and record sign-offs during connectivity drops. When network connection resumes, queued mutations synchronize reliably with the backend service.
2. Serverless Edge API & Report Compilation
- Approach: Offloaded API routing, webhook processing, and PDF report compilation to distributed serverless edge microservices.
- Rationale: Isolates intensive document layout generation from primary application database transactions.
3. Multi-Tenant Data Isolation (Row-Level Security)
- Approach: Enforced strict organization data boundaries at the relational database layer using token-bound Row-Level Security (RLS) policies.
- Rationale: Guarantees tenant isolation at the database engine level for all organization queries and storage access.
Security Safeguards
- Access Controls: Field engineers access assigned job tickets and site assets based on role permissions.
- Protected Storage: Customer facility identifiers, service logs, and site attachments are accessed through authenticated application sessions.
